Geothermal cooling

How it works:
 It moves the heat in the house through water in a closed loop which is circulated into the cool, saturated ground; the cooled water travels back to the house to the compressor, which blows cold air through vents in the ceiling.

  • Cost: Depending on the design and the type of conventional system it is compared with, expect to pay 20 percent to 50 percent more for a typical installation.  
  • Savings: Home and business owners can expect a 30 percent to 50 percent reduction in their cooling costs.
  • Benefits: These systems use much less electricity, last three times longer than conventional AC systems and produce domestic hot water as a free by-product.

Spray foam

How it works:
It is sprayed as a liquid which expands, fills in the gaps and then hardens, thus sealing walls to prevent air penetration and block outside noise pollution.

  • Cost: It starts around $2.30 per square foot and goes up from there.
  • Savings: Spray foam insulation translates to CUC savings of about 30 percent to 40 percent each month.
  • Benefits: Protection against water-damage from leaks, helps keep out insects and dust, reduces energy consumption.


How it works:
Solar photovoltaic panels produce DC power that is converted to AC for use in the home.

  • Savings: In many cases, electricity bills can be reduced by between 80 percent and 90 percent.
  • Cost: A system that can produce 10KW, which represents a typical residential core installation, will cost between $30,000 and $35,000.
  • Benefits: In addition to reducing your power bill, it is environmentally friendly. 

Green air conditioning

How it works:
A 26 SEER-rated Lennox XC25 air-conditioning condenser is up to 65 percent more energy efficient than conventional air conditioners so requires significantly less electricity to run.

  • Savings: Customers can lower their CUC bill by 33 percent to 60 percent
  • Cost: From $8,500 to $13,000 installed, depending on installation requirements and size of system.
  • Benefits: In addition to the energy savings, it is up to 50 percent quieter than standard air conditioners.

All these green technologies can be applied to new-builds or retrofitted to existing properties.
