Cayman’s warm climate offers year-round opportunities for indoor outdoor living.
As such, more and more people are extending their exterior spaces, whether building or improving patio spaces, seating areas, or installing outdoor kitchens.
Lori MacIntyre, kitchen and bath designer at BrandSource Home Gallery, is well-versed in the planning of bespoke spaces.
Here, Lori gives five top tips people should take on board when planning a stylish and functional outdoor kitchen.
1. LOCATION
Locating the kitchen adjacent to the main house has many advantages in terms of easily connecting appliances, plumbing and lighting, as well as having quick access to indoor amenities.
If you have a large property, you may consider placing your kitchen away from the house to create a separate entertaining area with a unique ambience.
You will probably be using the space midday to evening, so consider the elements and provide protection from sun and wind.
2. FUNCTION
Consider the function and who will be using the space. Will it be used for family dinners, larger gatherings, children’s parties or cocktail parties? This will help define the layout and appliance requirements.
3. APPLIANCES
There is a wide variety of outdoor appliances available today: grills, cookers, side burners, smokers, pizza ovens, ice makers, refrigerators, beverage or wine coolers. Consider installing a sink to make prep and clean up more convenient.
4. MATERIALS
There are many options for outdoor cabinets. There are now weatherproof cabinets that look and feel like high-end indoor kitchens. Realistic panels, fillers and mouldings bring design options that have previously only been available to indoor cabinetry.
One of the best materials for cabinets is marine grade high density polyethylene (HDPE) because it is resistant to the elements, including UV rays, salt water and other corrosive elements. These cabinets will never rot, delaminate or splinter, and never need refinishing.
If you prefer the look of stainless steel, keep in mind it is corrosion resistant, not corrosion proof. It will rust, so be sure to select a high-quality marine grade stainless steel as it is more resistant to corrosion. Powder-coated finishes add further protection.
Countertops should be fabricated from materials designed for outdoor use. Popular choices are natural stone, glazed ceramic and concrete as they are durable and UV resistant.
5. LAYOUT
Consider the traffic flow to and from the main house, as well as throughout the yard.
Create areas or zones for cooking, prep, bartending, refrigeration and keep in mind there may be multiple people using the area at the same time, so clearances are important.
Once you have some ideas in mind it is best to review with a professional who can advise on the most efficient use of the space and provide suggestions you may not have considered.
